Jewellery and accessories exhibition: Art-To-Wear

On view February 14 – March 14, 2008

Something Unexpected contemporary art gallery presents the exhibition Art-To-Wear by young European artists who are actively creating the individual, conceptual, methodical and experimental jewellery. Their works of art are exceptionally original, subtle in their form, from classical to modern.

The gallery will feature a number young, but internationally recognized jewellery and textile artists: Baltos Kandys (White Moths), Ugne Blazyte, Ruta Budvytyte, Egle Cejauskaite, Laura Dailideniene, Rasa Juskeviciene, Jurgita Erminaite, Karina Kazlauskaite, Ugne Kuprijonaite – Stasiunaite and Vita Pukstaite.

The jewelry contains a particularly wide spectrum of technologies and materials.

Technologies here means “domesticating” such cold and hard substances as metal, stone, gemstone, etc. Also technologies contribute in searching for enamel combinations and fusion of various materials.

The value of a jewellery piece depends on the originality of the concept and intensity of its influence and these are the criteria art pieces are judged by. The conceptual jewellery is distinguished by the novelty of  the concept in terms of material, trade, miniature format and closeness to a body.

The artist ‘s group BALTOS KANDYS (WHITE MOTHS) was founded while its members were still studying at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts (VAFA) in 1998. Since then, Auste Jurgelionyte (born 1976), Karolina Kuncinaite (b. 1975), Migle Lebednykaite (b. 1976), Rasa Leonaviciute (b. 1972), Laura Pavilonyte (b. 1976) and Julija Vosyliute (b. 1976) exhibit as a group and participate in contemporary art symposiums and projects in Lithuania and other European countries. The group uses felt as a media to create the art pieces.

Ugne Kuprijonaite graduated in the Metal Art Department and Design Department in VAFA.  The artist will present for the Art-To-Wear exhibit, a Collection of brooches with symbols- “The Idea: The Possibility for Numerous Editions, Tools and Jewellery.”

Unexpected blending of natural (silver, gold, amber, wool, human hair, wood) and manmade (paper, enamel, plexiglass, rubber, polymers) materials used in Ugne Blazyte’s art pieces attract attention and invite everyone to explore, touch, perceive, and understand them. The collection of accessories Two Become One is created for two individuals who are invited to merge into one body when they wear them. A touch, a contact with other body and materials as well as a strive for harmony in life has a strong influence on her works. She has an MA in Architecture and Design, her specialization is Jewellery.
